Top comedian Jason Manford has helped to give a Teesside primary school playground appeal a huge boost.
The famous entertainer headlined a sell-out comedy evening for Crooksbarn Primary School on Tuesday (16 April) at The Moline Cross – home of Norton Cricket Club where over £5,000 was raised.
Parents of children at Crooksbarn Primary School in Norton teamed up with the school last year to launch the appeal to breathe new life into the ageing playground which is used mainly by Key Stage 1 pupils (up to age 7).
Chris Twiby, Headteacher of Crooksbarn Primary School, said: “Jason Manford was appearing at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium on the same evening. One of our parents (Peter Vincent) is friends with Jason Manford and asked him if he would open our comedy evening before appearing at Yarm.
“It was a brilliant evening that left everyone in fits of laughter. Jason Manford and the other comedians all performed free of charge and the event has given the playground appeal a massive boost.
“The support from parents, The Moline Cross, the various sponsors, staff and other contributors has been overwhelming, and I can’t thank everyone enough. It has been a real team effort that has enabled us to raise over £5,000 which brings the overall playground appeal to around £18,000.
“The incredible support from everyone means that every penny raised from the £25 ticket price will go into the playground appeal pot.”
Crooksbarn is one of ten primary schools across Teesside and County Durham under the umbrella of Ad Astra Academy Trust.
Mr Twiby added: “The school and the Trust are continuing to explore other possible funding avenues but with the money raised so far, we are hoping to make a start on the new playground before the summer holidays.
“We’ve already earmarked some new playground equipment and with new surfacing it is going to be a big boost for the school.”
Anyone wishing to donate to the fundraising appeal or requiring further information, should contact the school on 01642 531750, email office@crooksbarn.adastraschools.org or via twitter/X @crooksbarnpri
The other Ad Astra Academy Trust primary schools are Barnard Grove, Brougham, West Park and West View in Hartlepool, Rosebrook in Stockton-on-Tees, Ayresome and Sunnyside in Middlesbrough and deaf Hill and Kelloe in Durham.
